Josep Martí and his wife Conxita arrived in Sitges in 1950 to open the
Mare Nostrum, which is widely recognized as one of the oldest restaurants
in the city. Their children, Leopoldo and Josep, grew up in the
restaurant and continue with the tradition their parents started. In the
early 50s, the first tourists from Barcelona began to arrive at the restaurant
to taste classic dishes such as Bistec Diane and Crêpes Suzette. The
house specialties are its handmade desserts and its fish dishes, which
are cooked following traditional recipes that respect the flavours of the
local produce. With this philosophy at heart, they’ve managed to flourish
for a long time. They’ve survived the economic crisis and continue
to pack out the premises with locals, tourists, and regulars thanks to
their friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere.
