The restaurant Can Merla opened more than 25 years ago. When the
former owners retired, they set about searching for a capable couple to
continue with the business. As they knew Isabel from her small store
and her construction worker husband Joan, they offered to let them
carry on the business. The couple had their doubts at first. However,
Isabel’s profits began to dwindle as other larger stores were opening in
town, which motivated them to take up the challenge. Their specialty
was grilled meat and snails, which they found a curious way to cook:
grilled over a wood fire on chicken wire. It tasted delicious, so they
soon made a name for themselves throughout the region. Isabel recently
passed away so Joan and their two children, Enric and Francesc,
have joined forces to continue the business in spite of their loss.
